Just before the Easter holidays Mrs Charles, Mrs McArdle and I all got on a late train from Weston and travelled up to London. Our Hotel was near Piccadilly, surrounded by bright lights and theatres. We were seriously excited, not because we were in London, but because we were going to the National Pupil Premium Awards at 9 o’clock the next morning as the School was a South West Finalist ! After a frugal dinner, we were too excited to eat, we turned in early so we’d be ready for the morning. Wednesday came and the sky was cloudless. We hailed a Taxi and set off across the city to the Drapers Hall; a wonderful building with huge mirrors, chandeliers and staircases, it was so posh!
We could see loads of other school staff looking just as nervous and excited as us, all sipping coffee and orange juice, all admiring the plush surroundings. Then, wow! We were dragged off to be interviewed by News at Ten presenter Nina Hossain and then let into a huge room that was laid out ready for an Oscar style celebration. We took our seats; Mrs Charles was keen to point out that Mr Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister, was sitting on the next table. There was barely 10 cm between them. Mrs Charles said how charming he was.
The awards started, the tension built – and then our name was read out and a huge picture of Mr Tucker’s class doing the Opera appeared on the massive screen in front of us. I squeezed between the tables and jogged up the steps to meet Mr Clegg and Mr Laws. They handed me a framed award and the camera flash bulbs exploded around us…….We were South West Winners and National Runners up!
Lunch was delicious; we met many people and had a wonderful day but in no time it was all over and we were back out in the afternoon sunshine and on our way to Paddington Station.
So why did we win this award ? It’s because of the fantastic job we all do in making sure all our children make great progress and have phenomenal experiences.
