Tanabata

100_3388 100_3389 100_3390 100_3393 100_3394 100_3397Yesterday we found out about Tanabata. It is a Japanese festival also known as the star festival. It takes place on the 7th day of the 7th month of the year. In present day Japan large Tanabata festivals are held in the streets which are decorated with huge colourful streamers.

People generally celebrate this day by writing wishes on tanzaku, small pieces of paper, and hanging them on bamboo, sometimes with other decorations.
We made our own decorations and hung them on bamboo branches. Some of our wishes were to reach a higher level in reading, learn our times tables and to fly!
We made streamers, kimonos, purses, wishes and lanterns.
